MATHIAS HEINICKE
Features
Mathias Heinicke (born 1871, passed away 1956) was a distinguished violin maker from Bohemia. He apprenticed under Ernst Reinhold Schmidt in Markneukirchen and further honed his skills in Italy with Eugenio Degani. In his early career, he worked in Budapest and Berlin before establishing his own workshop in Skalna in 1897. His labels document his workshop as “Wildstein b. Eger” (Wildstein near Eger). Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Heinicke emerged as a notable figure among Bohemian violin makers. He was known for creating high-quality replicas of Italian masterpieces, especially those by Stradivari and Amati, before developing his own unique designs. Utilizing old wood salvaged from churches, he favored varnishes in rich red and orange-brown hues, which bestowed a beautiful patina on his violins. Each instrument is both labeled and fire-branded internally on the back plate, displaying the maker's name and workshop location.
